Diani Beach is on Kenya's south coast, about 30 km south of Mombasa. Most travellers arrive from Nairobi (by air or SGR train) or directly into Mombasa, then continue south by road. There are three realistic routes — and your best choice usually comes down to time, budget and how much luggage you have.

Option 1 · Fastest
Daily flights from Wilson Airport (WIL) and Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA) into Ukunda Airstrip take about 1 hour. Operators include Safarilink, Jambojet and Skyward Express. Ukunda is right next to Diani, so a transfer to your villa or hotel is typically 5 to 15 minutes.
Best for: travellers short on time and anyone connecting from an international flight.
Option 2 · Scenic
The SGR runs daily between Nairobi Terminus (Syokimau) and Mombasa Terminus (Miritini) in about 5 hours. Comfortable, reliable and a lovely way to see Tsavo. From Mombasa Terminus, arrange a private transfer to Diani — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road.
Best for: travellers with time who want a relaxed, scenic option.
Option 3 · Road trip
Around 480 km via the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, with travel time of 8 to 10 hours depending on traffic and stops. Best done in a single day with an early start, or split into two legs (overnight in Voi or Tsavo).
Best for: travellers with their own vehicle or those combining a safari with the coast.
A taxi or pre-booked transfer to Diani takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Most drivers now use the Dongo Kundu bypass, which avoids the Likoni Ferry queues and is generally smoother for new arrivals with luggage.
The classic route. From Mombasa Island, cross on the Likoni Ferry (free for foot passengers, small fee for vehicles), then continue south to Diani. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours total depending on ferry timing. Worth doing at least once for the experience.
The newer Mombasa Southern Bypass connects the mainland directly to the south coast without the ferry. It adds a little distance but is more predictable and recommended for late-evening or early-morning transfers.
